What is the Theory Test?

The Theory Test is the first step to gaining your driving licence and comes in 2 parts, Multiple Choice and Hazard Perception.

Multiple Choice - This part consists of 35 questions and you will need to score at least 30 out of the total 35 to pass this section. The questions you will asked cover the following topics:-

  • Driver Attitude
  • Traffic Signs and Regulations
  • Vehicle Safety
  • Hazard Awareness
  • First Aid
  • Environmental Issues

I recommend obtaining a copy of one of the many books available that contain the official DSA Question bank as well as useful study tips, along with a copy of the Highway Code. These will prove invaluable whilst you are learning to drive. Please see my Literature Recommendations.

Hazard Perception - In this second part you will be shown 14 video clips, each containg the scene of a developing hazard which you must identify by clicking the mouse button. One or more of the clips may have 2 hazards that need to be recognised.

Each hazard scores a maximum of 5 points, this then reduces to 4, 3, 2 and 1 point the longer it takes you to spot the hazard. You will need to achieve a score of 44 or more in order to pass this part.

If you fail pass either part of the Theory Test, then unfortunately you will need to take the test again.
